Andy Mackay of the Norseman Hotel is to take over from Joan Campbell.

NORTH Sutherland Joan Campbell has stepped down after a 12 year stint with the Caithness and Sutherland branch on the Federation of Small Businesses’ (FSB).

Mrs Campbell, who was chair for the past two years, is succeeded by Andrew Mackay, who runs the Norseman Hotel in Wick and the Castletown Hotel.

Joan said, “Having run my own B&B in Melvich for many years and played a very active role in tourism, both locally and nationally, small businesses are in my blood.

“It was only natural that I would be drawn to the FSB – the independent voice for the self-employed owners of small businesses throughout the Highlands and Islands.

“In my time as chair, we have played a major role in changing some bad rules and regulations affecting small businesses nationally, including two concerning fire safety.”

She added: “The decision to step down was not easy but as I no longer have a business of my own I felt that it was right for someone else to take the helm. I am delighted that Andrew is the new chair – he is very knowledgeable and professional and is fully committed to the northern Highlands and its business community.”

Mrs Campbell is to remain as secretary of the FSB’s Highlands & Islands regional committee.

Born and raised in Keiss, Mr Mackay had stints in London, Brighton and Edinburgh before returning to Caithness in 2007 to own and run the Castletown Hotel with his brother Sandy. They have since taken on the Norseman Hotel.

Paying tribute to Mrs Campbell’s stint with the branch, Mr Mackay said: “I only hope that I can live up to the high standards that she has set.”

in Wick.

“The experience I have had has been invaluable in helping me to understand the needs of the local economy and the vital role that small businesses have to play in it.”

“I want to ensure that the branch continues to grow and enhance the great work Joan has done. We currently have over 350 members but the more we have the louder our voice locally when it comes to speaking out for small businesses.”
