PEOPLE in Thurso can get an opportunity next week to help in a bid to improve the look of the town centre. The community council recently set up a sub-group to examine ways to make the area more attractive for locals and visitors.

It is now wanting to hear from the public and is inviting anyone interested to come to the Pentland Hotel on Tuesday, February 27 at 6.30pm with any suggestions or comments. The community council will hold its monthly meeting that evening at 7pm.

Louise Smith, a member of the sub-group, said: "We have already decided on a phased approach – the first phase, Thurso Town Centre Initiative 2024, is seeking suggestions from local residents about what would enhance the area. With this in mind we are inviting people to attend the Pentland Hotel on Tuesday. Alternatively, suggestions can be emailed to me at: louinscot@aol.com "

She explained that one suggestion is a community weeding plan in which volunteers can confirm their availability to keep a specific area in Thurso weed free and pointed out that the community council is "actively seeking funding" for a photo project where large local photographs would be placed in empty shop windows.

Louise added: "The subgroup would like to speak to anyone interested in becoming an associate member of the group, willing to carry out actions linked with the initiative on a voluntary basis."
