Thurso man is given a chance for fresh start after verbal abuse led to end of 16-year relationship

A Thurso man who verbally abused his partner for almost a year may be given a chance to address his problem behaviour.

Graham Young (44) is to be assessed for his suitability to participate in the Caledonian Programme, which advises offenders with domestic issues.

Young, of Brownhill Road, Thurso, reappeared from custody for sentence at Wick Sheriff Court last week. He previously admitted arguing with his partner, Carly Sutherland, at their then home in Ravenshill Road, Thurso, between January 1 and December 27, last year.

Fiscal David Barclay said that over the period it was clear there was "something building up" in terms of the couple's interaction and the manner in which Ms Sutherland was being spoken to by her partner.

The fiscal continued: "This behaviour became more frequent over and above the robust conversations that couples might have. As time went by, the matter was reported to the police."

The deterioration in their relationship led to the end of the couple's 16-year relationship.

Sheriff Andrew Berry urged Young to comply with the Caledonian Programme assessment and added: "If you co-operate with the social workers, it is possible there will be a positive outcome for you and your family.

"I can't imagine that you want to go back to prison. The offence has been a wake-up call. Take this as an opportunity."

Young will return to court for sentence on July 14.
