CAITHNESS women are being encouraged to take a simple step that can prevent cervical cancer.

In the run-up to Cervical Screening Awareness Week on June 8 to 14, The Eve Appeal is calling on women to attend cervical screening, which is estimated to save up to 5000 lives every year.

The group, which raises funds for the Gynaecological Cancer Research Centre at University College London and raises awareness of gynaecological cancers, are keen to point out that although very rare in women under 25, cervical cancer is the second most common cancer in women under 35. Despite that, more than 20 per cent of women are still failing to attend the screening.

A cervical screen looks for abnormal cells on the cervix which can lead to cervical cancer. These abnormal cells do not usually have any symptoms so it is important to go for screenings regularly.
