Cat charity on the prowl for more Caithness volunteers
A local cat charity is hoping to attract more volunteers to help improve feline welfare in the county.
The roles include, but are not limited to, assistant branch team leader, Trap, Neuter, Return (TNR) volunteers, transport volunteers and indoor fosterers.
Cats Protection’s Caithness (CPC) branch is on the lookout for an enthusiastic cat lover who can join it for the vital role of deputy branch team leader/administration volunteer, assisting with the keeping of electronic records and providing support to the branch coordinator. CPC also needs a variety of people to assist in other ways.
As feral cats are wild animals, it is not possible to tame them, so the charity runs a TNR programme to humanely capture them before transporting them to a vet to be neutered and finally releasing them back to their home territory.
“The branch does a huge amount of work to help local cats in Caithness but now we really need people to join our very active a Trap-Neuter-Return team and oversee this vital part of our operations,” said branch coordinator Deirdre Campbell.
Drivers are also needed (the branch has its own vans) to assist in a variety of ways, such as collecting cats, taking them to/from the vets, delivering goods for fundraising events etc.

Finally, if you have a spare room that can be entirely dedicated to cats, then the role of indoor fosterer may be perfect for you. Within that room you will foster cats for the branch until they find a new home.
The charity will provide all equipment, training and support and has Covid-19 safe protocols in place for all volunteers.
Volunteering for Cats Protection is a rewarding experience because it provides the opportunity to be part of a truly worthwhile cause. The volunteers gain a lot of satisfaction from giving unwanted cats a second chance in life, as well as working with like-minded people – so if this sounds of interest then please get in touch with the charity.
The Caithness branch is part of Cats Protection’s national network of over 250 volunteer-run branches and 34 centres that help around 190,000 cats and kittens each year
Although the branch works hard to find new homes for these cats, the task is very challenging because for every cat that finds a home, there are many more waiting to come in, hence the need for more volunteers to help them continue their vital cat welfare work.
