TWO Castletown women are taking to the water to make a splash for charity. Claire Mcgovern and Amy Sutherland are today celebrating the halfway point in their challenge to take 100 dips in 100 days.

The inspiration for the fund-raiser came from the late Captain Tom Moore, who walked 100 laps around his garden to thank the heroes of the NHS during the coronavirus pandemic. The 100-year-old inspired millions around the world and raised £38.9 million.

"The idea came from the Captain Tom 100 Challenge. We decided to take on 100 consecutive days of dipping in the water and are raising money for The Captain Tom Foundation and Macmillan Cancer Support. We started on April 30 and we complete the challenge on August 7. Friday (June 18) marks the half way point for us – day 50 – and will be one to remember with the Scotland v England match that day, too.

"We have a fundraising page and encourage donations to support these fantastic charities. Its been an exceptionally tough time for many during the pandemic and all charities along with these ones have had a real knock to their funds due to restrictions. We would love to make a little difference to that," said Claire who pointed out that the pair have set no target for the amount they raise. "We will be happy with whatever we get," she added.

"We have really embraced the challenge dipping solo, together and with like minded folks along the way. In the sea and some lochs so far. It has been going well although when we started the weather was poor but we motivated each other. We also encourage folks to give it a go, too, if they are interested they can come along any time. Anyone who wants to come and join us can just get in touch," said Claire.

She and Amy hope their next 50 dips will be easier as the weather should improve but they may have to contend with more jellyfish if that is the case.

Their journey so far can be found on Facebook where they share their daily dips. You can find it on #100dips100days and donate by going to: https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/Claire Mcgovern3/1

There is also a group on Facebook called KW1 Swimmers- Kool Water Sw1mmers

"Here, we arrange times for dipping together along with a fabulous group in Wick who have recently started work on bringing the North Baths in Wick back to life with restoration and maintenance work in progress. They also have a go fund me to raise some much needed money for the works planned," said Claire who undertook a dip in the baths there recently with Lynne Duncan, the secretary of the Friends of the North Baths Committee. "We did the swim after the baths were cleared of rubble and given a lick of paint. Local businesses and volunteers in the community got together to carry out the work."

Claire added: "Getting in the water is so good for your mental health and wellbeing and really lifts your mood. Makes you feel alive. Ask anyone who has given it a go."
