Castletown map no longer all at sea, says community council chairman
A MAP in the centre of Castletown is no longer all at sea, according to local community council chairman, Billy Dunbar.
He explained that an error in the map –produced by Venture North which provides tourist information for the Caithness and Sutherland areas – has been rectified.
The map in the Main Street car park highlights some of the facilities in the village, including the health centre, shop/post office, garage, filling station, beach, public toilets, recycling centre and parking area but it showed the North Sea where Dunnet Bay should be.
Speaking at last week's virtual meeting, Mr Dunbar, said the word North had been blacked out so now all that can be seen is Sea.
The mistake was highlighted in a light-hearted way in the local press last month. Mr Dunbar liked the way the story was done with references to the error not making waves or even causing a ripple but he added: "That should put it to bed now."
Venture North pointed out the map was one of a series of 13 produced as a project around Caithness and Sutherland and linking in with similar projects in Easter Ross and Wester Ross. The purpose was to highlight infrastructure for visitors to the areas and make the signs as clear as possible to point to the facilities.

A spokeswoman, speaking at the time, said "a huge amount of work" went into the project and stressed Venture North worked with community councils and other community organisations in gathering the information."We will take the feedback into account should we run a project like this in the future," she added.
Meanwhile, efforts are to be renewed to find out when a piece of equipment at the play park on Main Street is to be returned.
A wire rope was damaged on a vertical swing some time ago and was taken away to be repaired but it has not yet come back, said community councillor, John Calder.
Caithness ward manager, Mac Sutherland, said a lot of play park equipment is waiting to be installed but agreed to try and find out what has happened to the Castletown swing.
