Canisbay heifer tops store cattle at Quoybrae

A TOTAL of 1374 went through the ring at Aberdeen and Northern Marts’ show and sale of store cattle at its Caithness Livestock Centre at Quoybrae on Monday.

Champion in the MacLean Farm Products-sponsored show, judged by Charlie Downie, of Mains of Techmuiry, Fraserburgh, was a 586kg Limousin heifer from D. G. Kennedy, Tresdale, Canisbay and sold for £1,200 to D. Brown, Burnside of Dipple, Fochabers. Reserve was a 549kg Charolais heifer from W. B. Ironside, Haster Farm, Wick and sold for £1,160 to D. G. MacKenzie, Weydale Mains, Thurso.

Bullocks (764) averaged 200.8p per kg (+15.1p on the year) to 228.9p for four 367kg Charolais from J & R Gunn, Gerston Farm, Halkirk and £1,340 gross twice for a 639kg Limousin from J & A Ross, Knapperfield, Watten and a 648kg Charolais from J. T. M. MacKay, Thura Mains, Bower.

Heifers (610) averaged 189.3p (+9.3p) to 220.8p for four 539kg Charolais from S. Sinclair, Upper Latheron, Latheron and £1,250 gross for a 600kg Charolais from H H & A Swanson, Tister Farm, Halkirk.

CAITHNESS stock was well represented at Dingwall on Wednesday when 940 were sold at Dingwall & Highland Marts Ltd’s annual show and sale of native and continental store cattle.

The Aberdeen Angus championship went to a 560kg bullock from Messrs G. & D. Coghill, Stemster Mains, Halkirk, realising £1240. Other prizes included: Continental cross heifer – 1 Messrs D. & C. Sandison, Smerral Farm, Bower. 2 Messrs R. & A. Meiklejohn, 2 Forss, Thurso.

Aberdeen Angus bullocks (174) averaged 202.6p (+19.9p on the year) and sold to 221.4p per kg for a 560kg cross from Stemster Mains, Halkirk, and £1320 gross for a pen of 652kg crosses also from Stemster Mains.

Other native bred bullocks (70) averaged 188.9p and sold to 210.6p per kg for a pen of 470kg Shorthorn crosses from Greenvale, Dunnet.

Continental bullocks (330) averaged 206.4p (+20.7p on the year) and sold to 244.4p per kg for a 315kg Limousin cross from Kennachy, Forss, and £1400 gross for a 705kg Simmental from Baillie Farm, Thurso.

Continental heifers (245) averaged 191.7p (+13.2p on the year) and sold to 272.7p per kg for a 330kg Limousin cross from Alvie Estate, Kincraig, and £1200 gross for a 530kg Limousin cross from Smerral Farm, Bower.

THAINSTONE, Aberdeen and Northern Marts (21st September) sold 872 store cattle and 18 young calves.

Bullocks (401) averaged 197.4p (-0.7p) and sold to 225.6p per kg for a pair of 348kg Limousins from Calier, Glenlivet and £1,350 gross for a 638kg Charolais cross from Parkieside, Rhynie and 642kg Charolais from Greenfold, Bridge of Marnoch.

Heifers (274) averaged 190p (+2.4p) and sold to 226.4p per kg and £1,150 gross for a 508kg Charolais from 14 Deveron Road, Turriff.

Bulls (12) averaged 151p (n.c) and sold to 197.8p per kg for a 546kg Limousin from Norton, Dounby and £1,300 gross for a 660kg Simmental from Norton.

Young and weaned calves (18) and sold to £220 gross.

Certified BVD free heifers (185) averaged 219.4p per kg (+11.1p) and sold to 297.9p per kg for a pair of 470kg Simmentals from Followsters, Newmill and £1,550 gross for a 514kg Limousin from Shiel, Muir of Fowlis.

In the Hi Health - SAC’s Premium Cattle Health Scheme sponsored show and sale of bulling heifers certified BVD

virus free and vaccinated, judged by Mr & Mrs W E Thompson, Nether Glasslaw, New Pitsligo.

The Overall Champion and Champion British Blue sired heifer and was a superior home bred 486kg 17 month old British Blue cross Limousin from G P Smart & Son, Shiel, Muir of Fowlis which realised £1,850 (380.7p per kg) and was purchased by the judges.

Reserve Overall Champion was a similarly bred 524kg 20 month old also from Messrs Smart realising £1,550 (295.8p per kg) to N Innes, Helnamore, New Aberdour

Champion Limousin sired heifer again from Messrs Smart was an 18 month old home bred 514kg which realised £1,550 (301.6p per kg) to L & E Fowlie, Guise, Tough.

Champion Simmental sired heifer was 598kg 21 month old Simmental cross from D A Hay, 48 Morrison Crescent, Maud which realised £1,350

(225.7p per kg) and sold to

C & G Gordon, Lost Farm, Strathdon.

‘Strong well bred and well presented heifers met an excellent demand. Smaller leaner types harder to cash.’

The firm had on offer 56 OTM cattle and three Store cattle from North and Highlands consignors with leading prices as follows:-
