A new toddler group in Watten has been awarded more than £5000 to help with start-up and basic running costs such as hall hire and craft supplies.

Watten Wee Ones is one of 13 local groups to receive a grant from the E.ON Camster Community Fund.

It has been established recently so that parents, carers and grandparents of children can come together once a week. While the adults socialise and share and receive parenting advice, the children benefit from safe and stimulating play.

One of the founding committee members at Watten Wee Ones said: “This grant will allow us to get organised with new toys, books and games for the children.

"We’ll be able to organise some really interesting sessions with new arts and crafts equipment. As a new group we’ve been so well supported by the community and we look forward to welcoming any new people who might want to come along in 2020.”

Other awards in this funding round include £2000 towards the 2020 Caithness science festival; £5800 towards the Lybster Bowling Club’s external wall repairs; £5146.46 towards the Watten Primary School P7 trip to Dalguise; £18,340 to contribute towards the extension of Latheron Hall car park; £1764 so that Clyth Burial Ground Association can buy new strimming equipment; and £6024 to Bilbster and Thuster Hall to renew its flat roof.

Stirkoke Rifle Club received £1408 to purchase a second sight to use with the group's blind/visually impaired system and associated equipment, £464 went to North Apex Gymnastics Club for travel costs to Gymfest in Perth, £2300 went to Watten School Parent Council to replace an old smartboard and Watten Pre-School Playgroup got £968 to buy new IT equipment.

Caithness Community Connections received two awards – £6050 towards the Latheron Youth Club and £20,800.58 to fully fund the Thrumster Youth Club, each year for two years.

Nick Taylor, senior stakeholder executive at E.ON, said: “We’re delighted to be able to support projects such as this new group, Watten Wee Ones, and make a contribution to the community in this way.”

The next E.ON Camster Community Fund deadline is March 31, 2020. Application forms and more information on the fund can be found here.
