Campaigners call for better health service for Caithness after meeting with north MSP

LOCAL health campaigners want to work with north MSP Maree Todd to "get a better health service for Caithness."

Ron Gunn, the chairman of the Caithness Health Action Team (CHAT), made the comment after a recent meeting with Ms Todd, the Scottish Minister for Women's Health and other group members.

Mr Gunn said: "It was a successful meeting which lasted over two hours and involved lots of discussions about maternity and many other healthcare related issues for our Caithness community."

He added: "We thank Maree for meeting with us. We covered a range of health matters, maternity and the Orkney model, GP appointments, outpatients, gynecology and ambulance cover to name a few. Maree has agreed to update us on our questions and follow up with NHS Highland on some of the issues we raised. As Minister for Women's Health she recently visited some other maternity units in Scotland and agreed with us that Wick community maternity unit should safely have more than the present nine per cent of Caithness mothers giving birth there. She thought 25 to 30 per cent would be more realistic. We want to work with Maree to get a better health service for Caithness."
