DOLPHIN and whale lovers in the far north are being urged to assist a scientific body with its research over a nine-day period starting next weekend.

Scientists at Sea Watch Foundation (SWF) are looking for marine mammal enthusiasts to help collect any records of whales, dolphins and porpoises and become involved in their marine conservation work.

From Saturday, July 27, until Sunday, August 4, SWF will be looking for wildlife enthusiasts around the UK to support National Whale and Dolphin Watch, a citizen science project.

No previous experience is required. All that people need to bring is patience, a lot of enthusiasm, binoculars, a sightings forms and a cetacean identification guide (downloadable from the Sea Watch website).

SWF suggests that people conduct their land watches for a minimum of one hour and should work in groups to take turns during data collection. There are manned sites around the country where experienced watchers will be available to assist first-timers.
