Caithness writer hosts talk about local surnames

Caithness-born freelance writer James Miller will be the speaker at Caithness Family History Society’s April meeting.

He will give those attending a glimpse into the meanings and origins of local surnames in a talk entitled Caithness Surnames.

James has written many books, including Scapa, The Dam Builders, The North Atlantic Front, The Foresters, A Wild and Open Sea, The Gathering Stream, Swords for Hire and The Finest Road in the World. His most recent is The Dunbars of Ackergill and Hempriggs.

The writer's interest in languages and dialect led to a dictionary of Caithness Dialect, entitled A Caithness Wordbook, which is now out of print.

The event is on Tuesday, April 11 at 7pm in Castlehill. The society be can contacted on caithnessfhs@btinternet.com or via its website and Facebook page.
