Robert Allan (79) – a member of Thurso RBLS for 60 years – was appointed chairman for the second time of the national group.

Nine years after he stood down from the position, he was voted back to lead the organisation.

Mr Allan, from Janetstown, Thurso, was surprised yet delighted and hopes to promote the work of the organisation.

“I didn’t think that I would be voted back in as chairman as I had previously been in the position, but I am delighted that I have been chosen,” he said.

“As part of my duties, I will be representing the Legion at all major functions, which includes attending the Cenotaph in London in November as part of the Remembrance Day services.

“It is quite a demanding role and takes up your time throughout the year, but it is one that I enjoy doing and I have 100 per cent backing from my wife and my colleagues.”

Mr Allan, who was born on a farm next door to the Castle of Mey, first joined the Thurso Legion in 1953 after he completed two years’ national service which saw him based in Tripoli.

Since then, he has been an active member of the local club, but will have to relinquish his ties with the Caithness division as chairmen are not allowed to be linked to an individual branch.

Jan Harvey, from the Glasgow and Western District of the RBLS, was appointed as vice-chairperson – the first woman ever to hold the role.

She is favourite to take over from Mr Allan when he steps down in three years.
