THE northern lights dazzled across the skies as Caithness was treated to one of the best displays of the aurora borealis in years!

Stargazers across the far north, from Wick to Thurso and John O’Groats to Castletown, ventured out into the evening darkness to watch the sky turn a sea of red and green on Thursday night.

Castle Sinclair Girnigoe car park was at full capacity as over 40 people drove to the outskirts of Wick to get the best view of the phenomenon which was at its brightest at 8.30pm and continued to dazzle until 10pm before it flickered away.

It was also reported dozens of passing places in rural Caithness were lined with cars as motorists stopped to stare in awe at what was happening above them.

The aurora was caused by a collision of particles from the sun with atoms in earth’s high-altitude atmosphere and was spotted as far south as Essex and South Wales.
