Heavy cloud ruined sightings of the sunset on the longest day.

The longest day of the year saw daylight in Caithness until almost midnight on Friday night.

Meteorologist Keith Banks said the Far North saw a total of 21 hours of daylight with first twilight at 2.45am and darkness at 11.45pm.

The official sunrise took place at 4.05am and sunset was timed at 10.28pm a period of 18 hours 23 minutes.

Next Friday, the period between sunrise and sunset will decrease to 18 hours and 15 minutes and in 14 days time to 18 hours and three minutes.

Unfortunately heavy rain and fog prevented any sightings of the sunset in Caithness.
