CAITHNESS rabbit breeders have proved themselves some of the top in Britain after returning home from an English show with armfuls of awards.

Several locals made the long journey to the Burgess Premier Small Livestock Show in Harrogate last weekend, where there were roughly 1700 rabbits competing in the two-day British Rabbit Club 5-star and 3-star shows.

Known as the Crufts of the rabbit world, there animal lovers can see exhibits from all over the UK and Europe competing to get through their breed classes and get onto Victory Row, hopefully then progressing to Best in Show.

Three Caithness women proved their expertise in the field. Maureen Thomson, from Wick, won awards with her REW (ruby eyed white) Lionhead, Snowdrop, and her teenage daughter, Abbie, came home with a swathe of wins and placings with her Mini Rex, Siberian, German Lop, Silver Fox and Lionhead rabbits.

Jane Wallace, from Thurso, also proved a winner with her two-year-old Hulstlander buck, Bequia Thumper. She was also exhibiting other Hulstlanders and a Delinaar and secured several placings for these in their breed classes.
