Caithness producers take part in Open Farm Sunday
Open Farm Sunday will give locals the chance to find out how a working farm operates.
LOCALS will be able to find out how a working farm operates through a nationwide initiative.
Bilbster Mains Farm, near Wick, and Caithness Summer Fruits, in Halkirk, will open their gates as part of Open Farm Sunday.
The national event is being organised by Linking Environment and Farming (LEAF) to demonstrate how farmers produce food and care for the countryside. Over 450 farms across the country are expected to take part.
Bilbster Mains will be holding its open day tomorrow (June 5).

During the event, there will be numerous activities for visitors to enjoy including a nature trail, displays of agricultural machinery, tractor and trailer rides, livestock displays and fun games.
Farm manager Simon Harrison hopes people will be able to learn as well as enjoy the event.
"The main emphasis is on having fun," he said. "We are delighted to be participating in Open Farm Sunday for the first time. Events such as these are important to help promote the agricultural industry. By learning about where their food comes from, we hope it will benefit sales of local produce."
Caithness Summer Fruits will open its doors next Sunday (June 12).
Visitors will be able to walk around the polytunnels and see how fruit is grown. They will also be able to get up close and personal with a number of farmyard animals including cows, chickens, ducks, hens, sheep and pigs.
Activities and competitions will take place for children and hungry guests will also be able to taste jam made with produce from the farm.
Trisha Sutherland, partner at Caithness Summer Fruits, said those who attend either of the open days will be in for an interesting a visit.
"We held an open day three years ago in conjunction with Open Farm Day," she said. "It proved so successful that we wanted to be involved again. I think that it is a nice opportunity for people to come to a farm and learn about where their food comes from.
"Bilbster Mains Farm is a completely different operation to what we have and those who attend both events will be entertained."
Both events will take place between 11am and 4pm.
