A Caithness policeman has confirmed that he is to contest a charge of assault while on duty.

Constable Derek McNeill is accused at Wick Sheriff Court of committing the offence at the junction of Princes Street and Olrig Street in Thurso on December 17 last year.

It is alleged the 60-year-old constable punched Jordan MacGregor on the face, to his injury.

McNeill, whose address was given as c/o Police Investigations and Review Commissioner, Hamilton, confirmed his not guilty plea on Wednesday.

His trial is to take place on November 14.
