CAITHNESS is set to be in the unusual situation of being one of the least windiest places in the UK, as the Far North is expected to miss the extreme weather due to hit the country today.
Northern Scotland had been predicted to bear the brunt of the tail end of Hurricane Katia which battered the east coast of America last week.
But last night low pressure moved south towards the central belt, resulting in the county missing out on the worst of the weather.
Met Office spokesperson Dan Williams said that Caithness will be the least affected area of the UK with winds only reaching up to 20 mph.
"The eye of the storm will pass over the Far North which is where the winds will be the slowest, he said."
"There is still heavy rain expected for tonight, but the winds are set to be quite tame and the situation will improve for the rest of the week.
"The worst of the winds will be towards central and southern Scotland and northern England where speeds are expected to reach up to 80 mph with rainfall of up to 70mm."
The Far North experienced extreme weather conditions at the end of August when 65mm of rainfall and 70 mph winds caused damage and flooding.
