Caithness General Hospital in Wick celebrates with fete

STAFF at Caithness General Hospital are hoping the sun shines on Saturday as they celebrate 25 years of being at the heart of the community.

The hospital is hosting a fête this weekend in the grounds as part of its ongoing jubilee celebrations and workers have organised a huge assortment of stalls and entertainment to keep local people amused, entertained and informed.

Locality general manager Pauline Craw explained that the various wards will have their own stalls between 12pm and 4pm and they hope to raise money which will help improve the hospital.

“From the theatres to the X-ray and renal unit, to A&E and the Bignold wing, they will all have their own stalls and the money raised will go to the refurbishment of the daycase unit,” she said.

“We’re just trying to upgrade the hospital for the sake of the community. We choose the daycase unit rather than any of the other wards as we felt a lot of the community pass through that area.”

Mrs Craw said she hoped that people would support the event as the daycase unit is one of the most commonly used facilities at the hospital, dealing with issues like chemotherapy, cataracts surgery, diagnostics and minor operations.

Entertainment on the day comes courtesy of Elise Lyall’s Highland dancers, Thurso gymnasts and the junior RBLS Wick Pipe Band.

The Women’s Royal Voluntary Service and league of friends for the hospital will be holding a baking stall and groups such as the MS Society, Headway Highland, Argyll Square Association, Mental Health Support Group and the rotary club are amongst those coming on site to join in the celebrations.

Mrs Craw said: “We’ve managed to get the community involved which is really good.”

Hospital broadcaster Radio Remedy, which is also celebrating its 25th anniversary, will be providing the music for the afternoon and honorary consultant surgeon Pradip Datta will open proceedings.

A hog roast, pancakes and shoppers lunches will also be available.

A signed Inverness Caledonian Thistle shirt is one of the prizes up for grabs in a raffle.

Winning tickets will be drawn at the hospital’s jubilee ball to be held in the Norseman Hotel on November 19.
