A FORMER police officer said the loss of a Highland-based fire and rescue control centre could be a cost-cutting measure too far.

Landward Caithness councillor Matthew Reiss said the decision by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) board to close its control room in Inverness may save money but was unsure whether it would help save lives.

His views came after the SFRS announced today that Inverness was one of five control centres across Scotland it was shutting down, reducing the number of centres from eight to three.

Emergencies which occur in Caithness will be passed through to its control centre in Dundee.
