Three new paintings have been added to the Royal Family's art collection – thanks to the creative talents of three Caithness children.

Matthew MacDonald (7), brother Gregor (5) and sister Chloe (2), from Thurso, handed over their colourful designs to the King after he had officially opened 8 Doors Distillery at John O'Groats on Wednesday.

The siblings were there with their mum and dad, Laura and Graham MacDonald. Laura's sister Kerry Campbell runs the distillery along with her husband Derek.

Laura was delighted by the encounter with His Majesty.

"He was lovely with the kids," she said. "They each designed a picture for him.

"Matthew did one with the John O'Groats signpost and included on it the important places in the King's life. He really liked that.

"Gregor did a picture of King Charles and Queen Camilla, and Chloe did a handprint picture of the King and Queen.

"He was really good with them all. He was asking if they're enjoying their holidays just now, and they said yes.

"They were really excited because the aide beside them said, 'You do realise that these pictures will be kept and they'll be put up in one of the palaces or one of his houses?' And they were like, 'Wow!' It was really nice."

Matthew's artwork has directional signs pointing to the Castle of Mey, Balmoral, Buckingham Palace and Dumfries House, complete with the distance in miles from John O'Groats. Above is a handwritten message saying: “Thank you for being the best King in the world.”
