Caithness champion at Thainstone's 34th anniversary cattle sale

A Caithness bred Limousin cross heifer took the top prize at a new year anniversary sale at Thainstone mart in Aberdeen on Friday.

Thainstone, Aberdeen and Northern Marts sold 1214 store cattle, young bulls and young and weaned calves at its 34th anniversary event, which was sponsored by livestock haulier Thomson of Sauchen.

The overall champion of the show – judged by Craig Allison, of Ovenstone Farm, Forfar – went to the first prize light heifer from Andrew and Shona Gunn, from Upper Dounreay, for a Limousin cross which scaled 518kg and went on to sell for £2450 to Backmuir.

The standing reserve was the first prize heavy heifer from Steve Smith, Sunnyhill, Turriff scaling 632kg for a Limousin cross and sold to £2450 to Backmuir.

Champion pair or pen of four went to first prize pair of heifers from Harry Emslie, Brae of Coynach, which scaled 522kg and sold for £1860.

Top gross of the day was £2600 for a 556kg Limousin cross heifer from Harry Emslie, Brae of Coynach. Steers topped £2060 for three 672kg Charolais cross from G & E Will, Westerton of New Rayne.
