A Caithness army cadet will assist Viscount John Thurso, the Lord-Lieutenant of Caithness, in his duties after being appointed to a year-long role.

Cadet Corporal Keanu Jones (16), from 1st Battalion The Highlanders’ Thurso Detachment, will help Viscount Thurso as the king's official representative for the area.

Cpl Jones was appointed to the role as the Lord-Lieutenant’s Cadet of Caithness in a presentation held last month at the Royal British Legion in Thurso.

He has been a member of the Army Cadet Force since September 2018, since when he has been a willing and able member of the group. He recently represented the battalion in the Cadet Cambrian Patrol held in Wales, assisting the team in claiming a gold level award.

Cpl Jones has also recently completed the Junior Cadet Instructor Course (JCIC) which now allows him to teach subjects to junior cadets up to and including 1 Star.

As the Lord-Lieutenant’s Cadet, Cpl Jones will accompany Lord Lieutenant of Caithness to events in his capacity as the king's representative to the county of Caithness.

Cpl Jones takes over the position from fellow cadet, Cadet Sergeant Callum Prideaux of Halkirk detachment.

Members of the 1st Battalion the Highlanders Army Cadet Force also received a number of awards presented by Viscount Thurso as part of the presentation evening.

The battalion has detachments in Thurso, Wick and Halkirk which meet weekly on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 7pm to 9pm.
