High winds are set to cause severe disruption in Caithness.

CAITHNESS is bracing itself this weekend for extreme weather as hurricane-force winds are set to batter the Far North.

The Met Office has issued a weather warning for the region and it predicts winds will reach speeds of up to 80 mph.

High winds are already causing problems in the Western Isles and are expected to reach the Far North by midday on Saturday and continue into the early hours of Sunday morning.

Met office spokeswoman Helen Chivers said that it is predicted the high winds will cause severe disruption to ferry crossings.

"It is expected that gusts of winds will be between 70 mph and 80 mph," she said. "The extreme weather will also affect the Northern Isles and Outer Hebrides due to an area of low pressure which is passing across the country.

"The high winds will hit Caithness from noon on Saturday to around 3am on Sunday with a high risk of waves overtopping sea fronts and causeways."
