John O'Groats is the setting for a new children's book about a larger-than-life character who finds himself shipwrecked on the north-eastern tip of Caithness.

Author Colin Sinclair says he has fulfilled a lifetime ambition by writing The Adventures of Johnny Groat – The Discovery and he hopes the story will "entertain, amuse and excite" young readers.

The book will be launched in Thurso this weekend.

Johnny, the tartan-clad, red-bearded central character, is the brainchild of Thurso-based Colin (53) along with his two sons, Arran (21) and Lewis (18).

“It has been a lifetime ambition to write a children’s book, especially one based in my local area," Colin said. "As a child I was always drawn to John O’Groats and it's that attraction that has inspired me to write this story.”

The book features colourful illustrations by artist Mandy Sinclair.

Colin explained: “Having temporary memory loss and being slightly disorientated, Johnny finds himself shipwrecked on the shoreline after a violent storm. Two young boys uncover Johnny from beneath a pile of sticky, stinky, slimy seaweed.

“As the story progresses it brings out a strong sense of belonging and acceptance for Johnny Groat in the area.

“Overall the book aims to entertain, amuse and excite young readers. It will also make an excellent bedtime story for the six-years-and-over age group.”

Published by Distant Light Entertainment, The Adventures of Johnny Groat will be launched on Saturday at the Thurso Pop-Up shop in the town's Princes Street. Colin will be there for personal signings, assisted by Arran who helped with the design and branding of the book.

“It has taken a long time to get to the point I'm at," Colin added. "I kept adding bits over the years but then when lockdown happened in January this year I got the ball rolling again and I was determined to get focused on the book.

"After months of writing and planning it’s finally completed, it’s ready, and ultimately I hope everybody likes it.”
