Some familiar sights will be on TV this evening (Friday) on Channel 5 as the latest episode of Secret Scotland focuses on Caithness and Sutherland.

The series, presented by Susan Calman, has been exploring various parts of the country with tonight's episode looking at the North Coast 500 route.

Susan is invited into Dunbrobin Castle. The fairytale castle outside Golspie is the largest "house" in the north of Scotland and has its own private railway station.

Moving up the Sutherland coast, Susan learns the story of Scotland’s gold rush – and how to pan for her own.

In Caithness she visits the Whaligoe Steps and hears how vital they were to 19th-century fishing, before getting a taste of the work of a herring girl.

After stopping off at John O’Groats, she goes to Dunnet Head for a spot of puffin-watching with Rob Hughes before travelling on to the nation's surfing capital, Thurso.

Susan’s last stop is in Durness where she explores Smoo Cave.

Secret Scotland is on Channel 5 tonight at 8pm.
