Children at a Thurso primary school rolled out the red carpet for the premiere of their very own animated films last month.

Taking inspiration from Enid Blyton book, “The Magic Faraway Tree”, children in class 2/3 at Pennyland Primary were tasked with creating their own adventure and mythical creatures to feature in an animation of their own.

On Friday, May 21, families of the pupils gathered were welcomed to a red-carpet event at Pennyland Primary School hall with refreshments before taking their seats to watch the premiere of each animated film.

The pupils in P2/3 planned and created their own mythical creatures and adventure inspired by the story of “The Magic Faraway Tree” before turning this into an animation in which they starred in.

This included using stop-motion, sound effects and voice overs.

Examples of the creatures included the “Underwater Pig”, a similar bodied beastie to Nessie that can live up to 10 decades.

Another interesting creature was “Unimer” who is said to be brave and magical and has a unicorn head, scales and wings.

The very powerful Zombessie, another character half zombie and half Nessie, is one who can blast hot water.

Class teachers Lisa Cowie and Lara Simpson said: “We were delighted to have had such a fantastic turn out of parents and family members of the pupils in P2/3 to watch our animated movie premiere.

“There was a lovely buzz of excitement around the hall and leading up to the event. The children worked so hard planning and creating their animations.

“It was a wonderful experience for the pupils to share and celebrate their learning and hard work with their families.”

After the viewing, an award ceremony took place with each group awarded for their efforts in categories such as “best description”, “best team work”, “best voice over”, “most creative” and “best animation”.

Parents were then invited to join their child in creating their own thaumatrope — an optical toy that used an illusion to create a moving image — which was used in creating early animations.
