Burial ground book launched at Thrumster event
A new book exploring the history of a Caithness burial ground is now on sale.
Fiona Begg’s Ulbster Burial Ground was launched by Caithness Family History Society (CFHS) at the Old Smiddy Inn, Thrumster, on Saturday.
Fiona was joined by fellow members of CFHS as she signed copies of the book.
The book contains photos and transcriptions of all visible gravestones at Mains of Ulbster, plus some extra family information about the people recorded on the stones.
There are also extracts, dating from 1890 until 1913, from the Ulbster Burial Ground Committee minute book.

The graveyard contains the distinctive Sinclair Mausoleum, built by Sir John Sinclair of Ulbster as a burial place for the Sinclair family.
Anna Rogalski of CFHS said: “Everyone was very impressed with Fiona’s information and by the layout, which was the work of Neil Buchan.
“A few dozen people turned up to buy signed copies of the book, to look at family photos and to chat about their own connection to Ulbster.
“One lady even came up from Helmsdale to purchase a book because her ancestors were from the area and she joined the society then and there.”
The books are available at The Gift House in Dempster Street, Gail’s Gift Box in High Street, MacDonald’s Bakery in Francis Street, all Wick, the Smiddy Inn at Thrumster and Halkirk Heritage and Vintage Motor Centre, as well as from CFHS.
The book was also on sale at Our Kind of Town, a showcase event for local voluntary groups, held at Wick St Fergus Church hall later on Saturday.
