A SECTION of wall was damaged alongside the Wick bridge in River Street after an accident.

The incident – reported to the police just before 8am on Monday but thought to have happened before 7am – involved an HGV vehicle going between River Street and Union Street, according to a Police Scotland spokesman. It was the only vehicle involved and no-one sustained any injuries.

The damaged section of stonework has been taped off for safety reasons and it is understood Highland Council will be carrying out repairs. Local councillor Matthew Reiss expressed concern about the possible financial implications for the local authority.

"Assuming the bridge is Highland Council's responsibility it is another example of where money could be used to make the road and parapet safe for vehicles and pedestrians at a time when Highland Council's finances have never been a greater concern," he said yesterday.
