A YOUNG local boy who never had the opportunity to meet his uncle is raising money in his memory for charity.

Cameron Mackay (13) was born over two decades after his uncle, Hugh, died from leukaemia when he was 10.

Inspired by hearing his story, Cameron decided he wanted to help others who suffer from the disease.

Along with his cousins, Korbyn (12) and Kane Cameron (15), Cameron will be setting off on a 40-mile walk to raise money for Children with Cancer UK.

Cameron said when he heard about how his father’s brother coped throughout the illness he wanted to do something.

“I was staying at my grandmother’s house where she told me all about my uncle,” he said.

“I saw pictures of him around the house and heard stories from my grandmother of what kind of boy he was. When I heard all about him I wanted to do something to raise money for those who suffer from leukaemia.

“My cousins were really keen on the idea of a walk and so insisted that they wanted to come along too.”

He added: “We are really looking forward to taking part in the walk. We have never done anything like this before and we just hope that it will stay dry!”

The boys will be accompanied on their journey by their parents which will start on Sunday.

The group will walk 40 miles from Thurso to Skerray, where Hugh’s family lived.

They expect it to take two days to complete and plan to camp in Melvich overnight.

So far the boys have raised over £360 through collecting donations from friends and family in Thurso.

The money will go towards funding cancer research and provide care to children who suffer from the disease.

The boys hope to raise £500 and are encouraging the public to donate generously.
