THE Beatrice wind farm off the Caithness coast has generated the highest output of electricity from any renewable source in Scotland.

The milestone was achieved just over two weeks after the last of 84 turbines was installed at the Beatrice Offshore Windfarm Ltd (Bowl) development. It reached an output of 587.8 megawatts which is enough to power 450,000 homes.

Three years after construction began, the last of the turbines was commissioned at the £2.6 billion Bowl development.

The final seven megawatt Siemens Gamesa turbine was installed 13 kilometres from the coast of Caithness last month.

Bowl is a joint venture development comprising SSE Renewables (40 per cent), Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (35 per cent) and Red Rock Power (25 per cent).

Onshore construction began in May 2016 and offshore construction got under way in April 2017.
