BOWER Community Council has been saved from extinction after it achieved the minimum number of members to keep it running.

The Highland Council has announced that Bower was one of 16 community councils which successfully managed to attract over half of the maximum allowance of members required to operate following a second application process.

Bower was the only community council out of 12 which exist in Caithness not to attract enough members after the first round of applications in October.

Nineteen areas in the Highlands were given a second chance to take part in the process, with only Caol, Inverness Central and Laggan still failing to meet the required number of members.

Former chairman Alan Roberts said that he is relieved to hear that the community’s views will still be represented.

"After standing down from the community council in 2011 after serving for 10 years, I reminded other members by e-mail to remember to get enough people to stand," he said.

"But it is good that they have now been able to get the required amount of members and that it will continue in the future."
