It is believed Frederick Mehlert died in the house fire although his identity is still to be confirmed by police.

A man’s body has been recovered from a house in Scarfskerry which was destroyed by fire.

Police Scotland have confirmed they have recovered the remains of a man from the croft which burned down on Wednesday, December 28.

Police have yet to confirm the identity of the man. But they have reported the family of Frederick Mehlert (95) who lived alone at the address have been informed about the recovery of a body.

Emergency services were unable to access the building for a number of days after the fire due to extensive structural damage which made it unsafe to enter.

Enquiries into the cause of the fire are continuing with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service to establish the full circumstances.

Police have reported there are no suspicious circumstances and a report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.
