Police have confirmed that a body found at Mugdock Reservoir near Glasgow was the partner of a murdered teacher who was originally from Wick.

Marelle Sturrock (35) was found dead at her home in Jura Street, Glasgow, on the morning of Tuesday, April 25, after police received a concern for person call.

Officers had since been searching at Mugdock Country Park for her partner David Yates in connection with her death.

His car had been found at the park but he had not been seen since Sunday, April 23.

The body recovered from the reservoir has now been formally identified as 36-year-old Yates, police said on Friday.

His death is not being treated as suspicious.

Yates was wanted in connection with the murder of Miss Sturrock.

An investigation remains ongoing, but police said there is nothing to suggest anyone else was involved in her death.

Reports will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal in due course, Police Scotland added.

Officers continue to provide specialist support to both families, the force said.

Miss Sturrock, who was 29 weeks pregnant, was a teacher at Sandwood Primary School in Glasgow.

She left Wick aged 17 but left a lasting impression on the community, where she was involved in amateur dramatics.

Tributes were paid to Miss Sturrock from many people across the county, with Jenny Szyfelbain, chairperson of Wick Players, saying she was "a beauty inside and out".

“I can honestly say she had an inner light that came from within her." Mrs Szyfelbain said. "You see some folk on a stage and you know they've been kind of born to it, and her personality matched what she was doing.

"She was a happy individual, always smiling, and obviously a very beautiful-looking lassie.

“Her ability to make bonds with the other players and her happy enthusiasm and talent will keep Marelle a special part of the Wick Players family.”
