POLICE have confirmed the body found in the Thurso East area yesterday afternoon is that of missing man Stephen McGurk.

A report has been submitted to the procurator fiscal but, according to Northern Constabulary, there does not appear to be any suspicious circumstances.

Police are continuing inquiries into Mr McGurk’s death and are keen to piece together his last movements.

Officers want to speak to a man wearing a fluorescent jacket and dark hat who was seen walking his dog in the Thurso East area between 3pm and 4pm on Sunday, February 5.

“This person may be one of the last people to have seen Mr McGurk before his disappearance and we would urge him to come forward with any information he may have,” said a police spokesman.

The number to call is Thurso Police Station on 01847 893222.

He also pointed out that as a result of the police media appeal, which included Facebook and Twitter, officers received crucial information from the public regarding sightings of Mr McGurk, some of which led officers to the area where his body was found.

“We would like to thank the public for their support,” added the spokesman.

Mr McGurk, who was 38, was last seen on Sunday about 2pm. The search for him got under way at the beginning of the week and involved the police, coastguard, the Thurso lifeboat, police dog handlers and members of the Caithness and Sutherland Search Team.
