WICK'S Newtonhill Community Woodland was turned into a bird box workshop last Sunday when members of the Caithness Countryside Volunteers made more than 20 standard bird boxes.

The completed boxes will be donated to community groups around Caithness and to the county bird recorder. The volunteers moved from the chilly outbuildings to the warmth of the Newtonhill cottage to enjoy a festive lunch.

The event was part of the Volunteering Matters Action Earth campaign and grant funding for the campaign was provided by Scottish Natural Heritage. The grants are aimed at groups that support and encourage volunteer activity through practical environmental projects.

Ian Cameron, secretary of the Caithness Countryside Volunteers, said: “We are very grateful to Action Earth for providing the funding to cover the cost of materials for our project. Thank you to the Friends of Newtonhill Woodland for providing a perfect venue and to Marina Swanson, High Life Highland countryside ranger, for helping to organise the event.”

David King, chairman of the group, said: "Wildlife is under pressure from many directions and every little bit of help counts. This project is providing a safe place for birds to raise the next generation.”
