Best of Scottish touring theatre back in Caithness

With the easing of Covid restrictions, Scotland’s top touring theatre companies are set to make the journey to Caithness.

Programmed as part of the Lyth Arts Centre (LAC) Spring season, performances will be taking place across the county in village halls, on the streets as well as back at the arts centre’s intimate studio.

The first theatre show of the programme sees a return visit to Caithness from award-winning SUPERFAN. The 2021 National Theatre of Scotland company-in-residence were last in the county with their circus show for babies, Little Top. This time they’re back with a heart-warming and hilarious piece for adults called Like Animals. A funny, poignant investigation into love and communication in human (and non-human) relationships, it is inspired by true stories and performed by a real couple. It’s on at LAC for two nights on Thursday 7th and Friday 8th April.

Later in April, internationally renowned company Vanishing Point is touring Caithness with The Metamorphosis: Unplugged, taking it to Latheron, Reay and Lyth. The show is set to be a fun-filled musical, cabaret-style night out.

Eleanor Scott, producer for Vanishing Point said: "We are thrilled to be returning to Caithness and to be working with Lyth Arts Centre once again – we had a brilliant time at Latheron Hall with The Dark Carnival: Unplugged in May 2019 and are excited to be returning, this time with the world premiere of The Metamorphosis: Unplugged.

"We’re also delighted to be visiting Reay, Latheron and Lyth – these are the most northerly venues on our tour and a couple of venues we've never performed in before. We can’t wait to meet the audiences and share a good night out.”

Chair of Latheron Hall Committee Alan Tanner said: “We are very much looking forward to the return of Vanishing Point to Latheron hall. If their last presentation is anything to go by we are in for another evening’s excellent entertainment.”

Julius Caesar by Company of Wolves will also hit the same route, visiting Latheron, Reay and Lyth too. Glasgow-based Company of Wolves were last in Caithness with the hit retelling of Achilles.

There is plenty for families too including Cat Sith, a large than life Scottish wildcat puppet coming to Wick and Thurso town centre in the Easter holidays. For older children aged 10+, Edinburgh Fringe hit The Hope River Girls, tells the real life story of a group of New York schoolgirls who all start acting very strangely.
