A DISQUALIFIED driver has been slammed by Sheriff Andrew Berry for having no respect for the law.

Unemployed Stephen Cosworth (38), of Dixonfield House, Thurso, was jailed for four months after he admitted driving a vehicle while banned.

Senior fiscal depute David Barclay told Wick Sheriff Court on Monday that police were on patrol on the A882 at Haster on Friday, December 16, when they saw a stationary car at the side of the road.

The police noticed that the car bonnet was up and went to speak to the driver who told them that his vehicle had broken down.

It was later discovered that Cosworth had been disqualified from driving.

Solicitor Jo MacDonald said that her client had previous convictions which included driving while disqualified and knew he was facing custody as a result of his actions.

As well as the jail term, Sheriff Andrew Berry banned the accused from driving for 10 years.

The sheriff, who described Cosworth’s rate of offending as "truly appalling", said a custodial sentence was the only appropriate course of action.
