THURSO High pupil Michael Stone has been awarded the Arthur Yates Memorial Shield.

The fifth-year student was recently presented with the trophy and book token, donated by local Labour Party members, by Cyril Digby-Grant (left) and Councillor Roger Saxon, of the Labour Party.

Depute head teacher Kathryn Mackay is also pictured.

The annual award goes to the pupil whose performance in Modern Studies shows a full understanding of the subject.

Arthur Yates, who died in March 2003, was a successful atomic scientist at Dounreay, an ardent trade unionist and Labour campaigner, originally from Orkney.
