Today Nicola Sturgeon is due to give evidence to the Holyrood inquiry into the government’s handling of complaints against Alex Salmond.
Mr Salmond claims there was a conspiracy to end his political career, which is adamantly denied by the first minister.
These two had once been good friends, working together for their party and for Scotland, but now their relationship has turned sour. The breakdown looks irreversible.
When man was created, he had a wonderful friendship with his Maker, characterised by unbroken love and harmony. However, Adam rebelled against God. The relationship between him and God turned sour. They became enemies instead of friends.
These things happened long ago, but we still feel the consequences. We continue to rebel against and disobey God, so we can’t have the loving relationship we were created for. The breakdown looks irreversible.
However, God took the initiative to make restoration possible and sent his Son. By his death, Jesus suffered as a substitute, so that those who believe in him are reconciled to their Maker and can once more enjoy knowing him.
God longs to re-establish a loving relationship with each of us. He has done everything he can to bring that about, but it can’t happen unless we do our part.
He needs us to own up to the wrong we have done, thought and said, and to resolve to turn from these sinful things. He promises to then reconcile us to himself, and we can then start to enjoy life with God as our friend, not our enemy. Life is much better that way.
Is God your friend, or enemy?
