AN exhibition by glass artist Carrie Fertig opens at the Thurso Gallery on Saturday (May 25) on the theme of "forgiveness" featuring some very moving and personal works.

Forgiveness is an interactive exhibition about the process of forgiving. Carrie Fertig was commissioned by the National Glass Centre in Sunderland to work with veterans, asylum seekers and dementia sufferers with carers on the theme of peace. She could choose anything that came up during the workshops and craft a solo exhibition around that idea. As she got to know the participants, it was clear to her that without forgiveness there is no peace.

Inspired also by The Book of Forgiving by Desmond and Mpho Tutu, the exhibition is divided into four zones, each zone a step in the process of forgiveness. The film, My Sister’s Bones, in the zone of granting forgiveness, depicts the artist’s personal story about forgiveness. She has created glass objects which are worn and acted upon, nearly all of which contain the remains of the artist’s sister. The exhibition includes film and sound installations, glass, sculpture, and performance.

Carrie Fertig has continued to work with diverse groups in Lybster and Inverness, in preparation for the exhibition’s Highland tour, collecting spoken and written stories that form an integral part of the content. Visitors can also add their own personal story of forgiveness to the exhibition throughout the tour. Forgiveness will tour to Inverness Museum and Art Gallery in July and August.

The project was initiated and supported by the National Glass Centre.

A preview of the Forgiveness exhibition will take place at the Thurso Gallery at 6pm on Friday – all are welcome to come and meet the artist.

The exhibition will run until July 6.
