Around 100 attend Caithness rugby quiz in aid of Doddie Weir charities

Quizzers in Thurso raised more than £1500 for Doddie Aid last weekend.

The event to support charities associated with the late Scotland rugby legend Doddie Weir was run in Caithness Rugby Football Club's clubhouse at Millbank.

Youth coach Donald Buchanan made the arrangements and set and asked the questions.

As well as the quiz, the 100 or so present took part in a raffle and draws to win overnight stays in hotels in Grantown-on-Spey and Gairloch as well as Doddie merchandise.

Mr Buchanan said: "I was delighted with the response from the people that came and those that donated prizes.

"We unfortunately could not accommodate everyone who wanted to come."

Friday evening's event raised a total of £1573.

Doddie Aid, launched by former Scottish rugby captain Rob Wainwright, runs until February 4.

More than 80 Caithness RFC members have been taking part in a national virtual mass-participation exercise event as part of the drive. So far, they have made £1500 from 4864 miles walked, cycled or run.

Since it started two years ago, 30,000 participants throughout Scotland have covered four million miles and raised more than £2 million.

The proceeds go towards My Name’5 Doddie Foundation, which funds research into Motor Neurone Disease, which in November claimed the life of the popular British and Irish Lions lock forward.
