A DISABLED war veteran is near to setting off on a 1000-mile world record attempt on a mobility scooter for military charities.

Andy McIntosh, from Strathaven near Glasgow, is a disabled army corporal who will try to make the fastest journey on the vehicle from John O’Groats to Land’s End when he sets off next Tuesday at 8am. He aims to complete the challenge in less than 16 days.

The 42-year-old served in the Cheshire Regiment for 14 years experiencing front line action in Bosnia, Iraq and Northern Ireland. He retired from the Army fully fit to pursue a new career but in 2008 discovered he had a very rare and inoperable vascular condition.

Andy and his young family have been supported by several military charities which he will be raising money for – Poppy Scotland, SSAFA, ABF The Soldiers’ Charity, Erskine and Soldiers off the Streets.

“There have been a lot of tears since receiving the news that my condition is untreatable, but I am a man who never gives up,” said Andy.
