POLICE have urged motorists in the Highlands to make sure that both they and their vehicles are fit to drive, after a spate of safety checks caught out several drivers.

Officers from the road policing unit in the Highlands made their plea after conducting spot checks of vehicles in Thurso, Golspie and Nairn between April 20 and 22.

More than 150 vehicles were stopped and eyesight tests carried out. Two drivers failed the test and were reported to DVLA for it to carry out further investigations into the drivers’ fitness to drive.

Other offences detected included an overweight vehicle and another being driven with a dangerous load and tyre defects. One driver and operator were reported to the Procurator Fiscal, Inverness and the other drivers were issued with fixed penalties.

Sergeant Calum MacAulay, of Highlands and Islands Road Policing, said: “We would encourage drivers to get regular eye tests to ensure they can continue to drive safely.

"Some people may have passed their test decades ago and may not have had their eyes tested so it’s beneficial to have regular check-ups.

"If you need glasses or lenses then please wear them at all times when driving. We remain committed to ensuring our roads are safe for all road users.”
