REPORTS that "large parts" of the Highlands have found themselves without firefighter cover on numerous occasions are "terrifying", a local MSP has said.

Highlands and Islands Labour MSP Rhoda Grant, has warned that rural communities already feel isolated enough without being left with gaps in firefighter cover. She has submitted a Written Parliamentary Question to the Scottish Government on the issue asking what will be done to resolve personnel shortages.

She said: “To see a large proportion of the Highlands and Islands not covered by firefighter cover is terrifying. Rural communities feel isolated enough. This a further example of urban approaches not working in rural areas and I wish to see it addressed urgently.”

She has also written to the Fire and Rescue Service asking for their response to these reports and if they believe this will occur again.
