Anglers braved the harsh winter weather on Tuesday to gather at the famous Falls pool at Forss to mark the opening of the 2020 season.

Rod owner and board member Mike Wycherly toasted the river in the usual manner with a dram supplied by the river's sponsor, Wolfburn Distillery of Thurso. Charlie Ross of Wolfburn was also in attendance.

Fiona Packard made the first cast after piper Alasdair Miller had led the procession to the Falls pool.

A minute's silence was observed for Forss board chairman Gavin Anderson who died suddenly in January.

River superintendent David Holmes said that last year the Forss River along with many others in Scotland had been hit by a mystery disease and he was hoping this would not be repeated in the coming season.

He said: "Last year some 134 salmon and grilse were landed at Forss, with the vast majority being returned to the river. This would have been substantially higher had we not had so many mortalities, particularly in the early part of the 2019 season."
