A CASTLETOWN woman has hit out after parts of an old boat and other items of rubbish were left near picnic tables at Castlehill harbour on the outskirts of the village.

Brenda Herrick, a former chairwoman of the local community council, said: "It seems as if someone dragged the boat to one of the picnic tables, smashed it up and then put other rubbish on top of it. It beggars belief."

She spotted the section of boat and other items, including a window blind, several tyres and a bag of rubbish, while out for a walk and said it made her "cross" to see them dumped between two picnic tables and beside a small litter bin. A third picnic table is nearby.

"There will come a time when people want to use these picnic tables again," Mrs Herrick said.

She also pointed out that two cars appear to have been abandoned nearby, along with a discarded oil heating tank and a number of old boats. Other boats and a rusty trailer are lying on the grass along from the harbour on the way to the beach.

"The cars are full of rubbish and have been there for quite a while and must have been abandoned. Some people just don't seem to care about their environment or anything," Mrs Herrick said.

"People should think about what they are doing. They are ruining what should be a beautiful place."

Castletown community councillor John Calder is also unhappy about the items left at the harbour. "It looks terrible and would be good if Highland Council could come and pick them up," he said.
