Altnabreac route included in new Caithness core paths plan

An updated core paths plan for Caithness has been approved by local Highland councillors.

Local members discussed a report summarising a review of Highland Council’s core paths plan for the county at a meeting earlier this week.

It followed a report and recommendations from Scottish ministers after a Public Local Inquiry which followed two public consultations held in 2017 and 2019.

Among the routes adopted as part of the plan is the track linking Altnabreac and Forsinain, with the exception of a level crossing which cannot be included for legal reasons.

It also includes new core paths between Holburn Head and Scrabster Quarries; at St John’s Pool; and the Sibster Trails, as well as several extensions and diversions of existing routes.

The Caithness area will now have approximately 50km of new core paths, taking the overall length in the county to 312km.

Councillor Struan Mackie, vice chairman of the Caithness Committee, said: “The report we discussed is very robust and is overwhelmingly positive in terms of getting people out and about. Being able to enjoy outdoor access is something we should be supporting and encouraging.”

Following the decision, the council’s online mapping of routes will be updated. Paths requiring signage will be signposted on a phased basis from 2025 onwards.
