WICK is officially home to the best whisky in the world after the tipple was proclaimed number one by an industry guru.

Old Pulteney's 21 year old malt, which has been made at the distillery in Huddart Street since 1826, was crowned the World Whisky of the Year in Jim Murray’s 2012 Whisky Bible.

The book, which is considered one of the most respected guides in the whisky industry, chose the Caithness whisky from 1200 drams from across the globe.

Renowned whisky expert Mr Murray said that the 21-year-old malt "exploded from the glass with vitality, charisma and class".

The award has drawn worldwide attention to the distillery, with interview requests coming from as far afield as South Africa.

Old Pulteney has won a number of awards in the past, but distillery manager Malcolm Waring said that this is the biggest accolade it has ever received.

"Staff at the distillery heard about the title first thing on Monday morning," he said. "It just speaks volumes for the product, which we put so much hard work into creating.

"In our industry Jim Murray is the most respected voice of whisky and this will give our product a boost on the international market."
